- W2141330792 abstract "For centuries, microbes have been used in different industries such as food, brewing, pharmaceutics, and agriculture. In agriculture, microbes are mainly used as an inoculant for providing nutrition and protection to plants. Several strains of bacteria can influence the growth, production, and protection of plants. Bacterial strains, which are used to increase plant growth by enhancing the uptake of the nutrient to the plants, are known as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria. The strains, which protect the plants from the disease-causing pathogens, are used as biocontrol strains. However, the agricultural applications of microbe are not very successful because oftheir low efficacy in the field. To improve efficiency, microbes should be modified genetically. To accomplish this goal, scientists utilize genetic engineering to modify the bacteria and construct new strains with improved properties. For example, genetically modified (GM) Rhizobia and Azorhizobium are now used as biofertilizers with efficacy. These bacteria have good survival capability in the field. Moreover, these bacteria have better competitive fitness as compared to the wild-type strain. Besides, some GM bacteria like Agrobacterium and Pseudomonas have good potential to protect the plants from insects, various disease-causing pathogens, and frost injuries. In this chapter, we describe the benefits of GM microbes in agriculture." @default.
