- W2141569229 abstract "Creative Ways to Care (CWTC) is a six session program, developed by the Commonwealth Respite and Carelink Centre (CRCC) Southern Region in Victoria, that aims to provide family carers of people with dementia with the knowledge, skills, resources and confidence to respond to BPSD and improve the quality of life for the person they care for and themselves. Carers learn how to use various proven therapeutic strategies to divert behaviours of concern and to connect, engage and have fun with the person they care for through meaningful activities. The multimedia training resource includes a DVD and Group Facilitator Training manual. The Lincoln Centre for Research on Ageing undertook a formal evaluation of the program in two Victorian Regions throughout 2010. Carers attending CWTC in 2010 were recruited to the study. Comparison groups were recruited from carers who contacted the service but were not enrolled in the program. Carers (n = 80) participating in the program were contacted at baseline, at the end of the program (time 1), and three months after completing the program (time 2). A comparison group (total n = 80) of carers was assessed at baseline and time 1. Quantitative and qualitative approaches for the evaluation included analysis of program materials and questionnaires comprising validated measures to assess: carer confidence in managing behaviours; quality of the relationship between the carer and the person with dementia; carer workload; carer burden; and the carer's quality of life. Data were gathered throughout 2010 and early 2011. The final report, due May 2011, will include analyses that incorporate region, in order to identify any differences that may be attributable to geographic location and local factors. Preliminary results from Repeated Measures ANOVAs found a significant improvement in the CWTC program participants’ quality of life (p < .017), confidence to handle care recipients behaviours of concern (p < .004), and relationship quality (p < .005), and a significant reduction in the amount of formal assistance received (p < .005), compared to carers who had not attended the program. Preliminary data analyses indicate that overall the program is achieving its aims and there have been significant benefits for carers who completed the program." @default.
