- W2142205659 abstract "textabstractSuccessful radiotherapy practice depends on the irradiation of tumours suchthat their destruction follows without unacceptable damage of thesurrounding normal tissues. Until recently the accurate acquisition of dataconcerning the tumour anatomy lagged behind other developments inradiotherapy. Since the arrival of the CT scanner, these anatomical data canbe displayed ideally for transmission into a computerised treatment planningsystem. The CT scan information concerning tumour location, irradiationvolume and dosimetry was compared with results obtained using traditionalplanning methods.CT scanning proves to be an effective method for imaging normal andpathological anatomy. It provides quantitative, 3 dimensional demonstrationof the tumour, its local and regional extension and its true relation tosurrounding normal tissue. For the first time in the treatment planningprocess itself, CT scanning offers a sophistication of tumour localisationequal to the demands of treatment planning computers and supervoltagetherapy capabilities. It has been incongruous in the past to use relativelyprecise and complex treatment algorithms when tumour localisation was, atbest, just an indirect estimate. In order to assess the place of computed tomography in radiotherapyplanning, the tumour target volumes are localised both be conventionaltechniques and with CT scanning under conditions simulating theradiotherapy. A comparison between the two methods has been made in agroup of 205 patients with tumours at various sites. Firstly the diagnosis andstaging is defined in order to localise the malignancy and decide the treatmentpolicy. Those cases which are to be irradiated are then planned using theconventional simulator techniques and a computer plan of the radiotherapydose distribution is produced." @default.
