- W2142803798 abstract "The Quantitative high-resolution planktic foraminiferal analysis of the Wadi Nukhul section (southwestern Sinai, Egypt) has revealed the presence of a complete sequence across the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) mass extinction boundary. The Late Maastrichtian Abathomphalus mayaroensis Zone and the Early Danian Guembelitria cretacea, Parvularugoglobigerina eugubina, Parasubbotina pseudobulloides, Subbotina triloculinoides and Praemurica inconstans zones are defined. The Abathomphalus mayaroensis Zone is here subdivided into four subzones ; namely from base to top : Racemiguembelina fructicosa, Pseudoguembelina hariaensis, P. palpebra and Plummerita hantkeninoides. The Guembelitria cretacea Zone is also subdivided into two subzones ; namely : the Globoconusa conusa at the base and the Parvularugoglobigerina longiaperetura at the top. The planktic foraminiferal extinction at Wadi Nukhul section occurred over a short period of time similar to the complete Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary section at El Kef, Tunisia (GSSP). At Wadi Nukhul only 5 species (about 9 %) disappeared before the Plummerita hantkeninoides Subzone, 38 (about 65 %) disappeared at or near the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary and 15 (about 26 %) survived into the earliest Danian. The species that became extinct at or near the Cretaceous/Paleogene (K/P) boundary constitute about 60 % of the population larger in size than 63 μm. They suddenly became extinct in a catastrophic event that coincides with the lower boundary of a claystone bed (about 1.5 m thick) lying at the lithologic boundary between the Sudr (calcareous shale) and the Dakhla (claystone) formations. Most of these species are of the large, complex and tropical-subtropical forms. The heterohelicids, guembelitrids, hedbergellids and globigerinellids constitute the survived Cretaceous species in the lowermost Danian sediments. These species are generally of the small, cosmopolitan and simple forms. They constitute about 60 % of the species in the lowermost part of the Danian sediments (Guembelitria cretacea Zone) and about 68 % of the population larger in size than 56 μm." @default.
