- W2143758825 abstract "INTRODUCTION My remit is to talk on the subject of the history and future of the cryopreservation of avian germ plasm. As a reproductive physiologist who is not a geneticist but has an interest in the physiology and biochemistry of gametes, the fertilization process, and preservation of spermatozoa in vitro, I pondered on the definition of “germ plasm”. In the wider context of animal production, for many years the words “germ plasm” have been used to define a natural cell or tissue capable of passing on genetic quality from one generation to the next. With the advent of molecular genetics and genetic engineering, however, the definition can become somewhat blurred. It might be used to cover, additionally, cell lines cultured for studies of the location of genes and their effect on cell expression, either alone or in combination. Such studies are aimed at explaining processes of inheritance and seeking ways . . ." @default.
