- W2144049306 abstract "DEVELOPMENTAL and genetic homeostasis are two concepts involving, among other things, the genetic structure and the phenotypic variance of cross-fertilized organisms. Populations composed of genetically heterozygous individuals usually manifest a lower phenotypic variance because each organism is better “buffered” against the environment than are homozygous individuals (Waddington, 1953; Dobzhansky and Wallace, 1953; Lerner, 1954; Mather, 1955; Dobzhansky and Levene, 1955). In addition, heterozygous populations are more resistant to sudden changes in the environment and possess more genetic variability than do homozygous populations. Lerner (1954) has presented evidence on these points and has noted that a heterozygous population is the most desirable one from an evolutionary viewpoint. The concept of “buffered” genotypes in poultry breeding was noted by Munro (1936) who named them “protective” genotypes. The effect of “buffering” upon improvement in egg production has been discussed by Lerner (1955). The subject of the sensitivity of experiments as a function of …" @default.
