- W2144243312 abstract "This report describes the radiosensitivity of an amoeboid cell. This cell, which appears closely related to the genus Hartmannella of small free-living amoebae, carries certain transferable factor(s) capable of inducing specific degeneration in cultured human cells. The terminal dilution principle has been adapted as an assay of single-cell survival in amoeboid cell cultures, allowing determination of surviving fractions as low as 10-5. The survival curve has a very prominent shoulder yielding a threshold dose of 600,000 rads with a D0 on the linear portions of the curve of 27,000 rads. At doses up to 600,000 rads there was a dose-dependent division delay. The DNA content of the amoeboid cells is about 10% of that in an established line of human cells; on the basis of DNA content they are highly radio-resistant. The unusually large shoulder and threshold dose may reflect a highly efficient repair mechanism.
