- W2144490254 abstract "He looked at the sky out of old habit but there was nothing to see. This is an essay about the weather and the power of the imagination. What I have to say is as much for people outside of the academy as it is for those of us within it. In the academy, and even within the circles of environmental literary criticism, it might seem romantic or naïve or old fashioned to suggest that the imaginative potency of literature can change values and behavior. But that is precisely what I believe—that reading literature can alter the way we imagine ourselves and our relationship with the weather. And now, more than ever, we find ourselves in need of it. The immediate context of global climate change argues for the pressing place of the weather in all of our thinking—whoever we are and wherever we are, not just in the classroom or lab. In the past 20 years, global climate change has gone from a debatable scientific hypothesis to an almost universally accepted fact. For climatologists, geologists, and other scientists, the history of climate change is written in air bubbles trapped in ice, its future mapped by complex computer models. But science is not enough to help us understand the profound impact of the changing weather on our physical and emotional lives. As much as to science, we must look to literary works of imagination to comprehend the full significance of what's at stake in and for a world facing up to global climate change." @default.
