• W2144936162 abstract "For drinking water disinfection chlorine is a very effective disinfectant; however, there are issues with the on-site storage of such a hazardous chemical and carcinogenic byproducts. UV and ozone are effective primary disinfectants; however, they do not have a residual effect in water distribution systems. A good candidate for a residual disinfectant to be used with these primary disinfectants is silver. Furthermore, Silver has been used for thousands of years with no lethal health effects. The Appendix A study reviewed published literature to assess the use and viability of silver as a disinfectant. And it was noted that silver has been used as a disinfectant for thousand of years. Information about it’s use in different areas of life are presented. The Appendix B study examined the disinfection effect of silver to kill Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aeromonas hydrophila, both of which are opportunistic pathogens found in water. And proved that silver does kill both species, although this inactivation is not instantaneous. Which shows that silver is a good candidate to be used as a secondary or residual disinfectant. Appendix C evaluated the efficacy of silver to inhibit biofilm formation on polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and stainless steel water distribution surfaces throughout time. With a constant water flow, and concentration of 100ppb of silver. Where there was found that there is no statistically significant difference in the biofilm formation in both surfaces with this silver concentration at the tested conditions." @default.
