- W2144958143 abstract "Census functions at the vector, word and bit level describe much of the computation involved in digi- tal signal processing algorithms. Parallel VLSI implemen- tations of census Computations typically use mesh or tree structures. Both approaches h ave a dvantages and disadvan- tages depending on the model for computation and commu- nication in VLSI as well as the scale of the primitive opera- tor and the overall computation. We review p revious w ork in this area, comparing meshes and trees with the obvious compromises of mesh-of-trees and tree-of-meshes. We gen- eralize this work by posing an optimization problem to min- imize the overall latency of a census computation which is parameterized by technology- and problem-dependent con- stants. We conclude by presenting three examples based on real CMOS layouts: 1) Boolean sum-of-products, 2) integer multiplier, and 3) polynomial evaluator. 1.
