- W2145215986 abstract "Analysis of the monokaryotic progeny of a dikaryon of Schizophyllum commune formed by mating a non-fruiting (NF) and a poorly fruiting (FII, edge type) monokaryon led to discovery of a new type of a monokaryotic fruiter (FI, ring type). The selection and crossing of FI-type monokaryons for four generations resulted in a progeny consisting of FI monokaryons in which the speed and stability of monokaryotic fruiting was much higher than in previous generations. In dikaryons formed by mating the FI monokaryons fruiting was also fast and took place in the dark, which is exceptional for S. commune . On the basis of morphological characteristics it was concluded that the alleles permitting monokaryotic fruiting were originally present in the parental strain with weak monokaryotic fruiting, and that their expression was enhanced by combination with some properties indirectly related to fruiting and originating from the non-fruiting parental strain. The strong influence of the mating of FI monokaryons on the dikaryotic fruiting suggested that the same genes were involved in mono- and dikaryotic fruiting. This was further supported by detection in the FI monokaryons relatively high levels of mRNAs presumed to be fruiting specific and originally detected as high levels in fruiting dikaryons. The fruiting genes studied here are possibly alleles of regulatory genes of fruiting which escape the control normally exerted by the incompatibility genes." @default.
