- W2145296706 abstract "Modeling, simulating, and analyzing human biological systems strains the capabilities of current analytical, experimental, and computational tools. Complex geometries and structures usually define biological components. Relevant processes are interwoven in their function and form, demanding care to isolate and inter-relate their scope and effect. For example, the sense of human hearing is made up of several sub-senses that perform localization, amplification, filtering, and pattern recognition of pressure waveforms. Acoustic processing requires transfer mechanisms based upon fluid wave mechanics, bar-linkage dynamics and kinematics, and electrochemical stimulation of nerve endings, to name a few. Modeling efforts to simulate portions of the process of human hearing, and three other example cases, are presented and discussed i n reference to the numerical, computational, and engineering challenges that they represent. A brief discussion is also presented of efforts directed at developing new visualization tools to composite on one image data from multi-disciplinary, or multi-modal, sources. In general this is an active area of visualization research requiring data storage, processing and display systems that can handle bodies of data that will not fit in their entirety on one single computational or display platform." @default.
