- W214599049 abstract "M OST COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES require students of voice to study French, yet there seems to be no consensus on how best to meet foreign language needs of singers.' The variety of foreign language requirements in voice programs throughout country offers, at first glance, little clear guidance to unprepared instructors who find themselves before a group of students in a class entitled French for Singers. The catalog descriptions of lyric diction courses in and German at Juilliard School of Music serve as example of difficulty in determining and meeting needs of voice student. The diction course is said to comprise: A study of phonemes of language from points of view of phoneticization (IPA), vocalization, and of text. Application of these to song and operatic repertoire with stress on declamation of translations (100). In addition to proper and vocalization, would it not aid artistic expression if singer were able to comprehend text as well? Interestingly, parallel course in German diction includes not only a thorough training in sounds and phonetics of German language using IPA as well as rules governing pronunciation but also an introduction to German (100). The decision to instruct singers in both phonetics and grammar echoes early work in this area by Laird-Brown: Students who desire to artistically require understanding of essentials of grammar, a knowledge of practical phonetics-and more (V). It is to elusive something more that we, as instructors of French, can add our expertise, for one of missing components must be a singer's ability to comprehend in its written form. Indeed, as Grubb points out, a singer has to be aware of the meaning and expressive intent of every word, of every line, and of overall text he is to sing (99)." @default.
