- W2146070086 abstract "It has been almost four decades since the first ultrasonic devices for imaging the fetus were developed. Conventional B-mode, or two-dimensional (2-D) ultrasound examination, which has been routinely used for the evaluation of fetal growth and development for more than two decades, has proved to be a powerful tool in modern obstetrics. Its two major failings, however, have been operator dependency and the inability to archive and review a complete examination. Many fetal malformations can be diagnosed by traditional 2-D ultrasonography, yet in some cases limitations do exist. For complex malformations, a high degree of expertise and training is needed to translate 2-D images into the interpretation of a three-dimensional (3-D) structure. Loss of contrast or improper fetal position can also sometimes cause difficulties in ultrasound examination of the fetus. 3-D ultrasound technology resolves some of these problems by allowing unlimited choices of possible viewing points by the operator. Therefore, interest in the applications of 3-D ultrasonography in obstetrics and gynecology is growing as the equipment performance improves and clinical experience accumulates." @default.
