Although it is true that teaching was one of the few fields open to many of them-even in the 1950s and 1960s, as jobs outside teaching became more plentiful-school districts that wanted them could find ample numbers of highquality applicants. Things are different now. Today's college freshman is less likely to aim toward a career in teaching than his counterpart at any time during the last thirty years. Furthermore, the intellectual ability of those who intend to teach, as measured by standardized tests, is markedly lower than that of college majors in every other field except ethnic studies. Though the gap in average test scores between prospective teachers and other students has not widened in the last decade, the proportion of particularly able people headed for teaching has declined. To add to this depressing picture, among those now teaching, more than 40 percent report that were they now college freshman, they would not choose this occupation. What has happened?'
