Hundreds, if not thousands, of attempts have been made at this engineering and athletic challenge, likely spurred by the Greek myth of Daedalus, who is credited with flying on wings of wax and feathers of his own creation. Scientific attempts at the problem of human-powered flight that had any chance of success arc relatively recent, the earliest such attempts being the Mufti and Pedaliante aircraft built in the 1930s. Even these were not successful in that their pilots were not capable of sustaining the aircraft in level flight, but could only make prolonged glides. The basic problem was the lack of sufficient power from the human engine for the level of technology then available. The main impetus for further developments of HPA technology has been the series of monetary prizes offered by the British industrialist Henry Kremer beginning in 1959. The original Kremer Prize was for a figure eight flight around two pylons 1/2 mile apart. Beginning within a few years of the announcement of the Kremer Prize, numerous aircraft were built for the express purpose of capturing it, primarily in Britain and Japan. After 18 years of failed attempts by an international field of hopefuls, the Prize was finally won in 1977 by the American Gossamer Condor. The Kremer Prize challenge made clear the other limitation of HPAs besides marginal power-insufficient control authority.
