- W2148784906 abstract "Abstract Proxemic relationships between adults (men and women) and children (boys and girls) were investigated in ten cultural areas on five continents. All data were collected via naturalistic observation in places of public access with equal access by gender during daylight hours. The results showed that during time intervals when cultural norms did not preclude men from being with children, the men were with their children in considerable proportions. In addition, the interactions between men and children—at the proxemic level—were consonant with the interactions between women and children. Age and, to a lesser extent, gender of children were important variables in determining the amount and kind of interaction they received from adults. The results are discussed (a) in relation to the position of Money and Ehrhardt that parenting-behavior is inherent in both genders of adult but that the threshold for activation and maintenance is lower for women than for men, (b) in relation to Homo 's phylogenetic heritage as a catarrhine, and (c) in relation to Homo 's ecological heritage as a social omni(carni-)vore with strong division of labor by gender." @default.
