- W2149164634 abstract "Background: About long-term outcome of children with neuroborreliosis in europe few or conflicting data are available. Methods: For the present study we examined 59 of 61 pediatric patients of the university children´s hospital of Wurzburg, Germany, who were dismissed with a diagnosis of neuroborreliosis in the years 1983 till 1996, during the year 1997. The Exam included a structured inteview, a physical exam, serologic and laboratory testing, a ecg, a phonocardiogram, and a ophthalmologic exam at the patients ophthamologist´s. Results: 50 of 59 patients met the diagnostic criteria of Borreliosis according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, USA. In the initial state of the disease 34% patients presented with isolated facial palsy, 28% with meningoradiculoneuritis, 16% with meningitis, 10% with headache and further 14% with different symptoms. All except one received antibiotic therapy. None of the patients showed signs of persistent infection or late stage borreliosis at the follow-up exam a median 63 months later. 5 Patients showed discrete residuums as a minimal residual facial palsy for example, which did not impair patients´ daily life activities. Unspecific symptoms as headache were common complaints, but we could not find any strong association between these complaints and the former borreliosis or follow-up serologic test results. The serologic tests showed a high number of positive results even after up to 10 years. These results are discussed im comparison to other corresponding publications. Conclusion: We found the prognosis of neuroborreliosis in childhood in central europe after early and adequate therapy to be very favorable. Reasons for discrepant findings of investigators in other regions might be infections by different subspecies of Borrelia burgdorferi." @default.
