- W2149257321 abstract "THE iron curtain which surrounds the Soviet Union has been breached to a considerable degree during the administration of Premier Khrushchev. Cultural and scientific exchanges since 1959 have contributed to better understanding of scientific accomplishments and level of services. A six-man Delegation on Environmental and Sanitary Engineering, of which the author was a member, visited the Soviet Union for 30 days in September-October, 1962. The team's observations were of laboratories, institutes, universities, and industries in and near the cities visited. Each city might be considered as a window in the iron curtain, each facing different countries and each giving a different view. Three of the cities visited, Kiev, Leningrad, and Moscow, face generally to the West, the route of entry for most Western visitors. Tashkent is one of the principal windows to the East. Through this city come delegations from countries of Southeast Asia. The view which they see is much different than that which the Westerner sees through one of the Western windows. Furthermore, the size of the country and the variation of health services are so great that even visitors from the United States are likely to return with different accounts of what they have seen. The following description of environmental health practice and services is based on personal observation and discussion with Soviet officials supplemented with information from Russian journals." @default.
