- W2149781113 abstract "In April, 2011, a 49-year-old British man was admitted to our hospital directly from a flight home from India. He presented with extensive electrical burns on his face, neck, left arm, leg, soles, and chest, from an accident in a faulty shower 4 days before while in Bihar, India. He had received treatment in two hospitals, and had received unknown antibiotics. On presentation he had raised inflammatory markers, hypotension, and acute renal failure, and required immediate resuscitation and intensive care. He was admitted to the burns unit, where he was placed in isolation. Blood cultures and screening swabs from all wounds were taken and he was given intravenous meropenem. The blood cultures grew a possible Vibrio spp, which was resistant to all antibiotics initially tested including ciprofloxacin, meropenem, and aminoglycosides, but was susceptible to co-trimoxazole (appendix). He denied having recent diarrhoea, and stool cultures were negative for Vibrio spp. Co-trimoxazole was added. The Vibrio sp was then sent to the Specialist Antimicrobial Chemotherapy Unit (SACU) in Cardiff, UK, which identified a non-01, non-0139, NDM-1 positive 1 Kumarasamy KK Toleman MA Walsh TR et al.
