- W2149889630 abstract "Bacteriophage IKe is a virus that has been shown to have a degree of specificity for coliform bacteria carrying conjugative plasmids of the N group such as RM98. Infection of RM98 + cells by IKe results in the development of a viral-carrier state. The carrier state is accompanied by a slight reduction in the growth and division rate of individual cells in the populations of carriers on solid and in liquid media but in no lysis or extensive loss of viability. When secondary infection of the population was prevented by phage antiserum and single cells and their progeny examined, the carrier state was found to be propagated for at least four generations but eventually to be lost. The antiserum also has a selective inhibitory effect on carrier cells indicating that under these conditions, loss of the carrier state may occur by two separate mechanisms. The behaviour of the progeny of one cell suggested that in rare cases and in the absence of reinfection, the carrier state could be propagated for many more than four generations. The progeny of two other rare cells were found to be mutants. These are of special interest because their characteristics suggest that the regions on the genome of the plasmid that specify IKe-sensitivity and conjugative ability are physically and functionally separable regions." @default.
