Mixed phase (f.c.c. dihydride and h.c.p. metal) films of intermediate thickness (20–80 nm) were partially oriented when they were grown under epitaxial conditions. Reflection electron diffraction studies of the top and bottom surfaces of the epitaxially grown films suggest that the formation of the dihydrides may be influenced by the presence of adsorbed hydrogen on the substrate. The f.c.c. erbium dihydride films are converted to h.c.p. erbium trihydride on heating in hydrogen." @default.
