- W2150303221 abstract "Balloon dilation has become an accepted form of therapeutic intervention for congenital aortic stenosis (AS) since first reported in children in 1984 1 Lababidi Z Wu JR Walls JT Percutaneous balloon aortic valvuloplasty: Results in 23 patients. Am J Cardiol. 1984; 53: 194-197 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (308) Google Scholar and in neonates in 1986 2 Lababidi Z Weinhaus L Successful balloon valvuloplasty for neonatal critical aortic stenosis. Am Heart J. 1986; 112: 913-916 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (65) Google Scholar by Lababidi et al. Some cases are not amenable to such therapy in the cardiac catheterization laboratory, however, because of inability to pass a guidewire retrogradely through the stenotic aortic valve orifice or difficulty in passing a sheath or a balloon to effectively dilate the valve. Such cases are referred to surgery and anterograde passage of a balloon for dilation. Transventricular balloon dilation (TVD) was first reported by Brown et al in 1985. 3 Brown JW Robison RJ Waller BF Transventricular balloon catheter aortic valvotomy in neonates. Ann Thorac Surg. 1985; 39: 376-378 Abstract Full Text PDF PubMed Scopus (18) Google Scholar Two cases are presented in which this technique was employed for relief of AS. In the first case, epicardial echocardiographic scanning was employed; whereas in the second, more recent case, intraoperative transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) was used to facilitate the identification of anatomic structures, evaluation of aortic valve gradient, and evaluation of left ventricular function. TEE is particularly useful in assisting the surgeon with the passage of a balloon through the aortic valve and assesses the immediate success of the procedure." @default.
