- W2150468695 abstract "This paper shows that a thin surface film on glass can have a marked effect on the threshold level for damage and the pattern of failure. Qualitative work with deposited carbon films, of thicknesses in the range 10-300 nm, showed that the form of failure depended on both the laser light energy density and the film thickness. For a given film thickness, increasing the energy density gave, firstly, damage consisting of a network of cracks (similar to that of fractured thermally toughened glass), and at higher values `flaking' damage in which cracks also formed parallel to the surface. The flaking damage is interesting in that controlled thicknesses (10-40 μm) could be `machined' from the glass. Films of metals, some organic liquids and grease gave similar patterns of failure. The films increased the absorption at the surface and a plasma formed; it is suggested that a significant part of the heat transfer to the surface comes from this plasma. With CO2 lasers the characteristic crack patterns formed both with and without deposited films. The formation of the crack patterns and the relevance of the results to various practical situations are discussed." @default.
