• W2151035708 abstract "Prairie restoration efforts are increasing in popularity for aesthetic and conservation purposes. However, much more emphasis has been placed on above-ground appearance rather than on whether the important, characteristic below-ground biogeochemical properties and functions of prairies have been re-established and/or enhanced through restoration activities. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of prairie restoration on soil physical and chemical properties in the top 20 cm across a chronosequence of tallgrass prairie restorations (i.e., 3-, 4-, 5-, and 26-yrs-old) as compared to adjacent managed pasturelands and a native tallgrass prairie in the Ozark Highlands of northwest Arkansas. Soil core samples were collected from the 0- to 10- and 10- to 20-cm depths at 15-m intervals along a 60-m transect through each soil mapping unit present in each field representing the six ecosystems. Results show that conversion from managed pastureland to tallgrass prairie restoration has had at least some effect, positive and/or negative, on most soil properties evaluated. However, not all soil properties appear to be following a linear increasing or decreasing trajectory towards magnitudes observed in the native prairie. The trajectory of change over time appears to differ among soil properties and soil depths. These results indicate that the predictability of prairie restoration effects on soil properties and future progress of prairie restorations in the Ozark Highlands may differ somewhat from that in other regions where grasslands are more typical due to the unique combination of edaphic and climatic conditions present in the Ozark Highlands." @default.
