- W2151552036 abstract "The stalkless crinoid Antedon mediterranea (Lamarck) is a passive suspension-feeder, relying on exogenous currents to supply it with food. The animal uses aerosol filtration mechanisms to remove particles from suspension and thus can feed on particles which are smaller than the mesh of its filter. The influence of food availability on feeding activity of Antedon were monitored quantitatively in a laboratory flow chamber. Because the rate at which the animal encounters food particles, is a combined function of particle concentration and of ambient current speed, both these variables were manipulated simultaneously and their combined influence on feeding activity were monitored. Ambient current speeds were varied between 0.4 and 3.7 cm · s−1 and concentrations of food (the unicellular alga Hymenomonas) ranged from 0 controls to 10000 cells · ml−1. Both particle concentration and ambient current speed shape the functional response of Antedon at all values tested; however, they do not show an interactive effect. I.e., the feeding activity of the crinoid is not a function of the rate at which particles approach the filter but depends only on the ambient particle concentration and current speed. This observation can be accounted for by hydromechanical effects at the filter and a complex behavioral modulation of the feeding response. In addition to the above effects, a novel form of hysteresis in the feeding behavior was discovered: response to a given current velocity depends on whether that velocity was reached by an increase or a decrease in speed.
