- W2152899497 abstract "When a clinician says, “Your range of motion will improve when your postoperative pain decreases,” the clinician is stating that postoperative pain and ROM improvement are strongly correlated. Correlation is simply the statistical expression of the relationship between variables. Physical therapy researchers use correlations to indicate the magnitude and direction of a relationship between variables that have been collected simultaneously from each subject under study, such as clinical test scores for gait and ROM or for age and muscle power. Correlation coefficients are widely used because they distill the characteristic relationship between two sets of scores (two variables) into a single, easily interpreted number. The most frequently reported correlation is the Pearson product-moment correlation coefficient (r). This type of correlation is named after Karl Pearson, who extensively reported its interpretation, assumptions, and limitations during his turn-of-the-century eugenic studies of the relationship between race and “innate” talent.1,2" @default.
