- W2152948614 abstract "When engaged in a biological research project it is often necessary to store the experimental material for future reference, whether it is in solution form, or is cellular. So my first look at cryobiology is quite pragmatic. I want to be able to freeze or freeze-dry most of the microorganisms and cells I work with, and keep them in a stable and viable state. In this way the problem of “suspended animation” has caught me, for its own sake. I wanted to see if I could find out why some cell forms can be preserved, but others cannot. One way to tackle this was to study the microorganisms which usually could be successfully treated, and find out if there was any linking theme for this. Is there a factor that can explain the varying survival upon freeze-drying of the different families of microorganisms? From such a finding or findings one could possibly deduce why the larger cells, such as those of mammalian tissues, cannot be so treated and possibly devise means to circumvent this. It is of some value to know t’he background work and hence, for those who are not microbiologists, I have attempted to indicate some of this in this prolix but nevertheless still very incomplete review. The aim was to try to show the special contribution of each type of microorganism to understanding anabiosis, whether natural or artificial." @default.
