- W2153294891 abstract "Azuma's Between Two Empires is a brilliant chronicle of how pre-World War II Japanese immigrants to the United States forged a complex transnational identity by negotiating the cultural, socio-economic, ideological, and racial contexts of both the Japanese and American empire-building. In 2005, the book received an award from the Japanese Association for American Studies and, in the following year, also received an honorable mention for the Frederick Jackson Turner Award given by the Organization for American Historians (OAH). These accolades on Azuma's work from both sides of the Pacific Ocean seem to suggest that transnational history is emerging as a new narrative of the modern world. Azuma argues that by understanding transnational nature of immigrants one will be able to grasp the meaning of multicultural America beyond the conventional dichotomies of the ‘loyal’ versus the ‘disloyal’, or of ‘citizens’ versus ‘aliens’. How can such transnational narrative, then, help students of international relations achieve a new understanding of U.S.-Japanese relations? Though the book is written for interdisciplinary audience, this review focuses on Azuma's analysis of Japanese immigrants and Japan's foreign relations." @default.
