- W215332885 abstract "This article reports two studies investigating the relationship between noctcaelador (psychological attachment to the night-sky), and morning-evening preferences. Study 1 examined the relationship between the Noctcaelador Inventory (Kelly, 2004) and a shortened form of the Home and Ostherg Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire (Chelminski, Petros, Plaud, & Ferraro, 2000). Study 2 examined the relationship between the Noctcaelador Inventory and the Preferences Scale (Smith et al., 2002). In both studies Noctcaelador was not significantly related to morning-evening orientation. It was concluded that diurnal patterns and time-of-day preferences exert little influence on night-sky watching behaviors and attitudes. ********** Recent research identified a latent construct accounting for the majority of the variance in night-sky watching attitudes and behaviors (Kelly, 2003; Kelly & Kelly, 2003). Kelly (2003) termed this construct noctcaelador, defined as a strong interest in and psychological attachment to the night-sky. Previous research indicates that this construct may influence some basic life decisions such as sacrificing needed sleep the night before an important examination and choosing living accommodations to better pursue opportunities to watch the night-sky (Kelly, 2004). Noctcaelador has also been associated with shorter estimates of habitual sleep-length (Kelly & Rose, 2005). Based on these findings, it is possible that noctcaelador is also related to morning-eveningness, or preferences for what time of day one performs various activities, i.e., sleep and cognitive or physical activities. Hence, the following research question was formed for this article: is noctcaelador significantly related to morning-eveningness? Study 1 After obtaining informed consent, 112 (64 female) students (M age = 32.5 years, SD = 12.8) enrolled in undergraduate psychology and graduate counseling courses were administered the 10-item Noctcaelador Inventory (NI; Kelly, 2004) and Chelminski, Petros, Plaud, and Ferraro's (2000) 5-item version of the Home and Ostberg Morning-Eveningness Questionnaire. The correlation between the NI and Home and Ostberg scale was not significant, r = -.08, p = .42. Study 2 The Horne and Ostberg scale has been described as sometimes difficult to understand by respondents and problematic for individuals with less habitual diurnal schedules, which includes many college students. Hence, the lack of a significant finding in Study 1 may have been the result of methodology. Study 2 was conducted, therefore, to explore the possible relationship between these constructs using a different, more easily understood morning-eveningness scale which doesn't use specific times of day for responses. After obtaining informed consent, 112 (96 female) students (M age = 26. …" @default.
