- W215435482 abstract "WHEN the Asian Productivity Organization (APO)held a meeting in Chiang Mai, Thailand, inNovember 1980 to discuss the production of foodlegumes in Asia, it highlighted that over the previousdecade food legume production in the region hadremained constant or declined despite growingdemand (Suzuki and Konno 1982). The symposiumattributed the slow growth in production to slowexpansion in the area planted to food legumes, andto low yield per unit area. Poor economic returnsand unfavourable government policy towardslegumes relative to other crops like rice and wheatdiscouraged ex~ansionin the area cultivated. whilelow prod-uctiviiy was blamed on inadequate water(mostly rainfed crops), marginal land, and lowproduction inputs, e.g. fertilisers, disease and insectcontrol. A meeting (organised by ACIAR,ICRISAT, and IRRI) was then held at ICRISATCentre in December 1985 to review the progress onAsian Regional Research on Grain Legumes(ARRGL) and to develop plans for futurecooperation. It was revealed that much of the foodlegumes are still rainfed and grown on marginallands. In India, rainfed agriculture represents 75%of the arable land or 108 million hectares, and evenif current efforts to bring more area under irrigationwere successful, at least 45% of the arable area willremain rainfed by the year 2000 (Guatam 1P83). Thesituation is more or less the same in most Asiancountries. Clearly, if a significant increase in foodlegume production is to be realised, production ofthe crops in rainfed farming systems will have to beimproved." @default.
