- W215480060 abstract "Reviewed by Alicja Muszynski Department of Sociology University of Waterloo Waterloo, Ontario N2L 3G1The first issue of Journal of Gender Studies appeared in May 1991, published by Hull Centre for Gender Studies in Hull, England. The Hull Centre formed in 1986 a group of local academics, students and townspeople who organize seminar programs and day schools and who receive a small amount of sponsorship from both University of Hull and H umberside Polytechnic. The aim of journal is to be both interdisciplinary and intern ational and to cover issue of in a wide - ranging manner. Further, according to editorial in first issue, subject areas are to include social sciences, arts and popu lar culture, and sciences. Finally, Centre uses desk - top publishing facilities to create an inexpensive product.Of particular interest to me was statement in editorial te rm gender was taken to mean the social constructs of femininity and masculinity, their interc onnectedness, and their cultural expression. However, only one article in first of three iss ues I have examined explores this particular theme. Other articles in first issue fit broad international and interdisciplinary themes much better than do those in two subsequent numbers .The first article in first issue, Against Fragmentation: The Need for Holism by Oshadi Mangena, was produced in context of a discussion by feminist researchers at University of Amsterdam in a project called Colloquium Gender in South - North Perspective However, article's working title was challenged by some of its members who advocated use of term to indicate research project aims to incorporate all sit uated experience of different categories and not just relationship between men and women. T he author takes up this theme of holism in her article and opposes it to practice of fragmen tation in scientific, especially in her view social scientific, methodology. She criticiz es postmodernist feminism for positing a multiplicity of different perspectives, conflicting and contradictory. Instead, she argues wholeness lies behind fragmentation....Accordingly, th e local or indigenous condition of women must be linked dialectically to global conditi on of women. She concludes that as an epistemological category idea of in relatio n to social analysis expresses only a limited whole. Given orientation of journal as stated in editorial and this first exposition of a problematic challenges reader to incorporate diversity or difference together with holism, I was excited to read more on th is theme, perhaps to hear about debates taking place in Hull Centre and elsewhere in world . Unfortunately, my appetite was whetted but not sated. While rest of articles in this f irst issue covered a wide range of topics -- a case study of how a trade union official in Hull use d equal value legislation to represent women in a fish processing plant and won; a critique of founding principles of natural childbirth movement as formulated by two of foun ders (Grantley Dick Read and Sheila Kitzinger); an article by Larisa Kuznetsova (co - chair of Union of Russian Women) on apparent political apathy of Soviet women; and, finally, a n interview with Nontobeko Mofokeng on first Conference on Women and Gender in Southern Africa, held in 1991 at University of Durban - articles in next two issues were far more academic and mainstream. …" @default.
