- W215496889 abstract "Prologue: A Writing Program Administrator Writes . . . Many Septembers ago, I left home, traveled to another state, and entered college, the first in my immediate family to open the doors of a post-secondary institution. I had been recruited. By the basketball coach. Not because I played basketball but because the coach had taught at my high school the year before and sent recruiters back to search out prospective students. Otherwise, I would never have heard about Albion College. Nor may I have known how to write this piece you are reading now. Not because of the writing instruction I received, but because I took a religion class. Albion was and is a Methodist college in southern Michigan, one of the small, liberal arts schools scattered in idyllic settings throughout the Midwest. In those days of dormitory curfews and dress codes for dinner (skirts for women), everyone was required to take a religion class no matter whether she was Methodist, Muslim, Catholic, or agnostic. Basic Values, a (non-doctrinal) offering of the fairly broad-minded religion department is what most of us enrolled in. Somewhere in the ethics part of my religion semester, we studied the tension between freedom and responsibility and we learned that they are two forces on the same continuum, always pulling against each other. They pull, but both are necessary in any ethical system. No one is ever really free without at the same time being governed by responsibility. (In other words, absolute freedom is an illusion.) But if the responsibility end of the tension pulls too hard, it chokes out freedom and destroys something crucial. In the nineteen sixties and early seventies, this claim addressed powerfully conflicted issues, and its message was especially poignant. So I learned and have always remembered that we guide our lives and decisions well if we expect freedom and responsibility always to tug at each other, if we expect them both to have a role in ethical choices." @default.
