- W215497600 abstract "Exposure to arsenic (As) is reported to cause adverse health effects in humans, including internal and skin cancers, vascular, neurological, and dermal manifestations. Several offices of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have As programs. The Office of Water (OW) is concerned with the Safe Drinking Water and Clean Water Acts. After reviewing the As database, the EPA established a maximum contaminant level goal of zero and a maximum contaminant level of 10 μg/l. The Office of Pesticides Program (OPP) is working with chromated copper arsenate (CCA). It has been realized that humans, especially children, were exposed to CCA from playground equipment and soils. OPP negotiated with the wood-treatment industry about CCA, and they announced a voluntary phase-out program of CCA for residential uses. Because As is found in two-thirds of contaminated waste sites, it presents potential hazards. The Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response (OSWER) makes remediation decisions based on human and environmental risk assessments. To support these decisions, OSWER is developing toxicity values for short-term As exposures and improving bioavailability data." @default.
