- W2155076501 abstract "At menstruation, vasopressin (VP) is one of the strongest uterine stimulants that exists. Indirect evidence of VP involvement in the regulation of uterine activity was published by Fuchs & Coutinho (1). They showed that in- hibition of uterine activity was obtained when the endoge- nous VP release was blocked by expansion of the plasma volume. Using a sensitive radioimmunoassay, we recently investigated circulating arginine VP levels in women with primary dysmenorrhea and in healthy controls on the first day of menstruation (2). The women with dysmenorrhea had a significantly greater VP secretion than the controls. Even after pain relief had been obtained by treatment with a prostaglandin synthesis inhibitor the VP level remained high in the dysmenorrheic women. Judging by these results it may be assumed that VP is of importance in primary dys- menorrhea, acting on the uterus via a final stage of prosta- glandin release. To further elucidate this mechanism we are at present studying plasma levels of VP and various prosta- glandin metabolites at short intervals at the onset of men- struation. Moreover we are investigating the effect of exoge- nous VP on circulating prostaglandin metabolite levels and on the uterine activity." @default.
