- W2155211724 abstract "The proportion of mosaic and complete mutations after two concentrations (1 mM and 10 mM) of ethylnitrosourea (ENH) was scored in two systems of Drosophila melanogaster: dumpy mutations and sex-linked recessive lethals. About two-thirds of the dumpy mutations after treatment with ENH were somatically manifested as mosaics. This mutagen appeared to be very efficient in the induction of X chromosome lethals. Some of them were detected in the F3 as mosaics (indicating mosaicism of the germinal tissue of F1 heterozygous females—primary mosaic). While the proportion of dumpy mosaics was not considerably lower than the number produced by other mutagens, the proportion of mosaics among recessive lethals was rather low; it was closer to that observed after radiation than after treatment with chemical mutagens. The average mutation sector of mosaic recessive lethals was 43%. 5 out of 18 primary mosaics showing recessive lethals turned out to be instabilities; they gave rise to secondary mosaic heterozygous females in the F2. The manner of distinguishing clearly mosaics and instabilities from semilethals with variable expressivity is described. Among confirmed instabilities, 3 mutant lines gave rise to one secondary mosaic only and in 2 instabilities F1 mosaic heterozygous females gave rise to two secondary mosaic heterozygous F2 females each, i.e. the induced instability probably replicated as such. In most of the secondary mosaics nonlethal unstable cultures gave rise to lethals repeatedly in the F3 and F4. Lethals originally appeared in the F2 of one of the unstable lines and gave rise to nonlethals in the F3 and F4. On the basis of these results, ENH should be added to the list of mutagens which induce instabilities. Under our experimental conditions, a considerable number of primary mosaics turned out to be instabilities." @default.
