- W2155287142 abstract "Early detection of acute human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection is important for patient management, the safety of blood transfusion products and screening of donors for organ transplantation. Fourth generation HIV assays permit simultaneous detection of HIV antibody and p24 viral antigen. These assays have increased sensitivity compared to third generation assays, which detect HIV antibody only, and so reduce the diagnostic window period. 1 Ly T.D. Laperche S. Courouce A.M. Multicenter evaluation of a new, automated enzyme-linked immunoassay for detection of human immunodeficiency virus-specific antibodies and antigen. J Clin Microbiol. 2004; 42: 21-29 Crossref PubMed Scopus (52) Google Scholar Since 1st November 2003, all the specimens received for HIV screening at the National Virus Reference Laboratory in Dublin are screened using a fourth generation HIV assay, the Murex HIV Ag/Ab combination assay (Abbott–Murex Diagnostics). The AxSYM HIV Ag/Ab combo combination assay is used for screening urgent specimens (Abbott–Murex Diagnostics). Prior to this date, specimens were screened using third generation assays, the Murex assay and the AxSYM antiHIV1/2gO (Abbott–Murex Diagnostics). Specimens giving negative results are reported as negative for HIV. Those giving positive results undergo further analysis with a second assay (since 1st November 2003, the VIDAS HIV DUO (Biomerieux – previous to this date either the Murex or AxSYM third generation assays). Specimens giving positive results in two assays are confirmed for HIV lgG, using the lnno-lia HIV I–II line immunoassay (Innogenetics) to discriminate between HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections. Where the two screening assays give discrepant results, or if the line immunoassay is negative, the specimen is assayed for HIV p24antigen using the Innotest HIV antigen mAb assay (Innogenetics)." @default.
