- W2155480158 abstract "Abstract BRIGGS (1946) reported that an unidentified feather-pigment factor, found in liver, was necessary for New Hampshire chicks fed highly purified diets. It was suggested that the factor may be identical with vitamins B10, B11, or folic acid. Briggs, and Lillie (1946), in a preliminary report, stated that folic acid (vitamin Bc, pteroylglutamic acid), when added to the basal diet under the same conditions, prevented the abnormal feather pigmentation. A continuation of this study was made to throw further light on the relationship of foilc acid and the feather pigmentation factor, the results of which are presented here. After our work was completed, an independent investigation by Frost, Dann, and McIntire (1946) showed that Black Leghorn chicks receiving a purified diet developed depigmented feathers unless they were given injections of folic acid at a level of at least 10 micrograms per day.
