• W2155607819 abstract "SUMMARY The developmental level and nutritional status of a group of 17 children aged between six and 24 months who were admitted to hospital with severe protein-energy malnutrition were studied from admission to hospital until 36 months after returning home. They were compared with a group of 14 adequately nourished children of similar age who had been admitted to hospital for other reasons. Initially the malnourished group were markedly behind the controls in developmental level, and they failed to reduce their deficit in hospital. Over the following 36 months they showed a gradual improvement relative to the controls in developmental level, height and head circumference, but were still significantly behind at the end of the study. In contrast, they caught up in weight for height by one month after returning home. When length of stay in hospital, age at admission, birthweight, mother's IQ and home background measures were taken into account, the direction of the differences between the two groups and significance levels were unchanged. RÉSUMÉ Etude longitudinale de la croissance et du développement d'enfants Jamaiquains á la suite d'une malnutrition sévère, protéinique et énergétique Le niveau de développement et l'état nutritionnel d'un groupe de 17 nourrissons âgés de six à 24 mois, hospitalisés pour malnutrition protéino-énergétique sévère ont étéétudiés depuis l'admission á l'hopital jusqu'á trois ans aprés le retour á domicile. Iis ont été comparés avec un groupe de 14 enfants de même âge correctement nourris, hospitalisés pour d'autres raisons. Initialement, le groupe sous-alimenté est resté nettement derriére le groupe contrôle en terme de développement et le déficit ne s'est pas comblé durant le séjour hospitalier. Cependant durant les 36 mois suivants, il y a eu une amélioration par rapport aux contrôles pour le niveau de développement, la taille et le tour de tête, mais le retard persistait dans tous ces domaines á la fin de l'étude. En revanche, le poids normal pour la taille a été atteint un mois après le retour à domicile. Lorsque la durée du séjour à l'hopital, l'àge à l'admission, le poids de naissance, le QI de la mère et l'habitus social étaient pris en compte, le sens des différences entre les deux groupes et les niveaux de signification n'étaient pas modifiés. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG Eine Langzeitstudie über das Wachstum und die Entwicklung junger Kinder in Jamaica, die eine schwere Proteinmangelernährung überstanden haben Eine Gruppe von 17 Kindern im Alter von sechs bis 24 Monaten, die wegen einer schweren Proteinmangelernährung stationär im Krankenhaus behandelt worden waren, wurde vom Zeitpunkt der Aufnahme ins Krankenhaus bis zu 36 Monate nach der Entlassung nach Hause fortlaufend auf ihren Entwicklungs-und Ernährungsstand untersucht. Sie wurde mit einer Gruppe von 14 normal ernährten Kindern gleicher Altersstufe verglichen, die wegen anderer Gründe im Krankenhaus stationär waren. Anfänglich war die Gruppe der mangelernährten Kinder gegenüber den Kontrollen in ihrer Entwicklung deutlich zurück und während der Zeit des Krankenhausaufenthaltes machten diese Kinder auch keine Fortschritte. In den folgenden 36 Monaten zeigten sie eine graduelle Besserung in Relation zu den Kontrollen in Entwicklung, Größe und Kopfumfang, aber sie waren auch am Ende der Studie noch signifikant zurück. Im Gegensatz dazu hatten sie bereits einen Monat nach der Entlassung ihr Gewicht im Verhältnis zur Größe aufgeholt. Unter Berücksichtigung der Dauer des Krankenhausaufenthaltes, des Alters bei der Aufnahme, des IQ der Mutter und der häuslichen Verhältnisse blieben die Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Gruppen und die Signifikanzen bestehen. RESUMEN Estudio longitudinal del crecimiento y el desarrollo de jóvenes niños Jamaicanos recobrándose de una desnutricion proteica grave Fue estudiado desde el ingreso en el hospital hasta 36 meses después de regresar a su domicilio, el nivel de desarrollo y el estado nutritivo de un grupo de 17 niños de seis a 24 meses de edad. Fueron comparados con un grupo de 14 niños adecuadamente nutridos de edad similar, que habian ingresado en el hospital por otras razones. Inicialmente el grupo desnutrido estaba muy por detrás de los controles en el nivel de desarrollo y no consignuieron reducir el déficit en el hospital. Depués de los 36 meses de observacíon mostraron una mejoría gradual en relación con los controles en el nivel de desarrollo. estatura y perímetro craneal pero se mantenían todavia significativamente retrasados al final del estudio. Por el contrario recuperaron el peso y la estatura un mes después de su retorso a casa. Cuando se tuvo en cuenta duración de su estancia en el hospital, la edad de ingreso, el peso de nacimiento, el CI de la madre y el ambiente del el hogar, no se modificó el sentido de las diferencias entre los dos grupos, ni cambiaron los niveles significativos." @default.
