- W2156801719 abstract "It is demonstrated that an electrical current can produce abrupt macroscopic steps that retain their shape as they propagate on the surface of a miscut single-crystal metal thin film. A simple kinematic theory is developed that shows why these shock waves form, and that gives their velocity. We then derive an approximate equation of motion that allows us to study the structure and interactions of shocks that propagate along the applied electric field, as well as the propagation and structure of oblique shocks. If the surface height is independent of the transverse coordinate, the approximate equation of motion reduces to the Burgers equation. In general, the equation of motion is the dissipative Zabolotskaya-Khokhlov equation." @default.
