- W2156819070 abstract "This paper is one of a series of papers from a unique longitudinal study of sexual identity development in tomboy (N = 50) and nontomboy (N = 49) girls. Data come from the initial evaluations of these girls and their parents. This report focuses on parental factors in gender role socialization. Analyses indicate little difference between the two groups in parent-child contact during the first 5 years of the child's life. While parents of both groups felt equally close to their daughters, tomboys were more likely to choose their fathers as favored parent and they were more likely to model their fathers. Fathers from both groups had similar masculinity self-ratings. However, mothers of tomboys were more likely to have been tomboys themselves and to accept tomboyish behavior on the part of their daughters. The results are consistent with a social learning explanation of psychosexual differentiation." @default.
