- W2156924054 abstract "Free Space Optics (FSO) has become a viable, high-bandwidth wireless alternative to fiber optic cabling. A morepractical solution to extending the high availabilityran~e is to back-up the FSO link with a lower data rate radiO frequency (RF) link. This hybrid FSO/RF system would extend the 99.999% link range to longer distances andopen up a much larger metro/access market to the carriers. However, the atmospheric turbulence is the major limiting factor in these types ofsystems. The use ofthe optimal Adaptive Optics (AO) systems is investigatedfor mitigation ofturbulence effects in the Hybrid RF-FSOsystems. We develop the efficient analysis and simulation tools for modeling the highly random, turbulence degradedoptical channel. Ko1mogorovphase screen models are used to generate realistic aperture plane distributions and calculations and prediction oflaser beam parameters. Optical adaptive optics system is used at the receiver end. It is shown that the use ofadaptive optics greatly improves the performance of the Hybrid receiver by reducing the scintillations induced errors. The world is experiencing a massive expansion of the global telecommunications network. First came the tremendous growth of the long-haul, wide-area network (WAN), followed by a more recent emphasis on metropolitan area networks (MANs). Meanwhile, local area networks (LANs) and gigabit Ethernet ports are being deployed with a comparable growth rate. In order for this tremendous capacity to be exploited, and for the users to be able to utilize the broad array of new services becoming available, network designers must provide a flexible and cost-effective means for the users to access the telecommunications network. At the present time, however, most local loop connections are limited to 1.5 Mbps (a TIline). As a consequence, there is presently a strong need for a high-bandwidth bridge (the last mile) between the LANs and the MANs or WANs. A number of optical access technologies are now being developed, with the objective being to address the needs of this important emerging optical-access market segment.
