After viewing what he perceived as disgraceful and shameful programming (on one channel was adultery, on another cursing, on another man boating another over the head with hammer), he decided to take action through church involvement. Wildmon, an ordained United Methodist minister since 1965, received his Master of Divinity from Emory College in 1965. He served in the United States Army's Special Services division and pastored various churches from 1965 until he founded the National Federation for Decency (NFD) in 1977. The NFD laid the groundwork for what was to become the AFA. The AFA defines itself as a Christian organization promoting the biblical ethic of decency in American society with primary emphasis on TV and other media. According to organization spokesperson Alan Wildmon, Rev. Wildmon's brother, the AFA is pariah church group with primary focus on bring[ing] about change as far as television programming is concerned and . . . tak[ing] the steps needed to abolish the circulation of pornography. As an advocate of traditional family values, the AFA encourages its supporters to take action against advertisers, networks, and other broadcast media conglomerates deemed morally deficient or deviant by the AFA. Unofficial membership in the non-profit organization is based solely on AFA Journal subscriptions of $15 year. Income generated by the publication's circulation of 453,000 is bolstered by donations from those on Don's mailing lists, according to Alan Wildmon. In addition, Alan Wildmon asserts that while the AFA exists as Christian organization, there is no specific religious doctrine to which its supporters are expected to adhere. The AFA claims to have benefactors who are members of the U.S. Cabinet, of Protestant faith, and from Mormon and Jewish communities. Speaking of its reputation as an extreme right organization, Alan Wildmon insists this is not true by comparing AFA to liberal organizations, stating that the AFA participates in society the same as the American Civil Liberties Union, People for the American Way or the National Organization for Women. The organization is comprised of 60 full-time employees, five full-time attorneys, and referral agency for sexual addiction counseling.
