- W21580243 abstract "Analysis of neutron or x-ray scattering data, Mossbauer or NMR spectra etc. often proceeds via the specification of the local structure. In many cases, especially where the data is only partially complete, it may be useful to compare experimental results with similar experimental or computed data for representative crystals. In recent papers, several authors have noted the extent to which their data does, or does not agree with similar measurements for compositionally-related crystalline solids. In favourable cases, this may allow the local structure to be defined and may also provide evidence for the absence of alternative candidate structures. Thus NMR measurements on Ni-B alloys suggest that Boron is surrounded by Ni atoms with the symmetry of a trigonal prism rather than an Archimedean antiprism. In this paper, an attempt is made to examine the significance of the statement that the local structure of certain glasses and crystals is equivalent. It is shown that in some alloys, at least, occurrence of particular local structures may be a consequence of an extensive medium-range structure and may have little to do with the exceptional stability of “quasi-molecular” units but a result of atomic ordering involving several tens of “local structural units” over a correlation length of about 1–2nm." @default.
