Indeed, it was considered to hold the human race together not just because people came from all corners of the world to be initiated, but also because the Mysteries seemed to offer the key to the whole question of human existence. In 364 AD, a Roman official, an initiate, pleading the case of the Mysteries before the Catholic emperor Valentinian, who wished to abolish them, clearly stated that life ( bios ) would become ‘unliveable’ ( abiotos ) if the celebration were to cease.
