- W2158889305 abstract "Teaching literacy to middle level students was once easy. Or so it seems, looking back. When I started teaching, I was given a convenient checklist of discrete skills for reading and writing. I could plod through them one by one, check them off, and then—voila—my students were literate. My sixth graders began the year with nouns and state identified vocabulary words that started with a. They finished with a research paper, and if I was lucky, they made it to z on the vocabulary list. My materials were chosen for me by a committee at the district level, and I was sure that those seasoned veterans knew exacdy what I needed for my classroom. Designing materials for that type of classroom was linear—just like the curriculum itself. Publishers would analyze state documents and identify the vocabulary and skills needed to be taught. Editors then gave writ ers lists of the words and skills and commissioned them to write interesting stories around those words and skills. For literature programs, publishers would poll teachers to find out what classics they expected to see at each grade level. Then the production cycle began. Literacy instruction is no longer linear. And ideas about what literacy is and how it should be taught have changed radically. These changes have enriched our students' literacy experiences. However, at the same time, they have complicated the lives of everyone involved in education—from the classroom teacher to the educational publisher. For educators who advocate more authentic literacy activities, these complications seem very much worthwhile. Over the past decade or so, publishers of middle school materials have had a harder time than publishers of other levels of materials in meeting the needs of cus tomers. Transitions to the programs and practices asso dated with middle school philosophy have caused mid dle level educators to question the very core of the cur riculum, including the practices used to teach students to read and write." @default.
