- W2159842014 abstract "1.Discuss challenges in pediatric palliative care research and strategies for overcoming such challenges.2.Describe important design issues for a researcher to consider when developing a research project.3.Identify collaborative opportunities in the pediatric palliative care research community. There is an urgent need to understand the experiences and outcomes of children with advanced illness, and to develop interventions aimed at easing suffering in children. Research in pediatric palliative care, aimed at addressing this need, is a newly emerging field. Rigorous research practices in this nascent field are needed to inform the development of optimal practice. However, investigators face a myriad of challenges to conducting sound research, including small sample sizes in children with diverse illnesses and conditions, short term follow-up, lack of standardized outcomes measures, difficulties engaging families about highly sensitive topics, and scarcity of funding sources. This workshop will engage pediatric palliative care researchers in discussions to (i) provide an opportunity for discussing these hurdles and ways to overcome them, (ii) highlight the relevant design issues a researcher needs to consider when developing a project proposal, and (iii) support the development of a research community within the pediatric palliative care field. Specifically, participants will be able to:1.Identify areas of active and needed research and describe the range of research methodologies relevant to pediatric palliative care.2.Give at least five examples of practical or ethical issues that affect subject recruitment, along with strategies to address them.3.Identify (i) three characteristics that make an outcome measure useful for the research setting, and (ii) two advantages, and (iii) two disadvantages of using parents as proxy respondents.4.Recognize and justify research designs (eg, qualitative studies, secondary analysis using large databases, cross-sectional, and longitudinal studies) appropriate for various research questions, citing the advantages and disadvantages of each.5.Identify collaborative opportunities in the pediatric palliative care research community.Specific activities will include:(*)panel presentation followed by large group discussion(*)small group activities using research questions and ideas elicited from workshop participants.
