- W2160052384 abstract "(1) Pollen grains of Tradescantia were irradiated at 50, 5, 0·5 and 0·25 r/min. with X rays and at 5, 0·5, 0·25, and 0·1 r/min. with γ rays. The total dose delivered was 200 r and was constant. The number of chromosome and chromatid breaks were determined in samples fixed 24, 48 and 72 hours after irradiation. (2) In the samples fixed 24 hours after irradiation there was a considerable individual variation presumably because the cell and chromosomes were in their most labile condition when the irradiation was given. For this reason the results of the 48 and 72 hours samples were of much more value for comparison than those of the 24-hour sample. (3) The average number of breaks in the case of both X rays and γ rays was found to be less in samples fixed 72 hours after irradiation at 0·5 r/min. and for those fixed 48 and 72 hours after irradiation at 0·25 r/min. (4) No positive evidence was found of any difference in breakage frequency of cells after X and γ radiation at the same dosage-rates. (5) Difference in external environment and in development can affect the breakage frequencies of the chromosomes. In particular a very significant yearly variation was observed. A “standard” breakage frequency applicable to all conditions is clearly not possible. (6) At low dosage-rates not only was a reduction observed in the breakage frequency, but also a much smaller proportion of the breaks were involved in interchanges. This suggests that at the low dosage-rates the radiation injuries produced often recovered before a second injury in the same cell offered an opportunity for interchange. (7) During the irradiation with X rays at 0·5 and 0·25 r/min. and with γ rays at 0·1 r/min., cell division is not suppressed. Data are obtained which suggest that the developmental cycle of cells is altered. (8) The results obtained indicate that the amount of radiation-induced damage in a cell depends to a great extent on the length of the life cycle of the cell relative to the duration of irradiation, i.e. relative to the dosagerate." @default.
