- W2160673643 abstract "Of the possible methods of calculating the doserate from a radium implant, that of using a reconstructed model has been discussed from time to time (Parker and Meredith, 1939; Windeyer, 1946; Nuttall and Spiers, 1946). It is generally held that whilst the principle of this method is satisfactory the actual means of reconstruction so far available have been relatively laborious and time-consuming, so much so that other techniques of dose assessment have been adopted. The reconstructor now described overcomes this criticism, enabling a complete radium implant to be reconstructed from radiographs in from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the number of needles used. By placing auxiliary marks on, say, the skin of the patient, or by making use of prominent bony points, a certain number of anatomical points can also be reconstructed on the model. The dose-rates can then be calculated, at as many points as are required, by any suitable method, using the geometrical dimensions of the completed model. Alternatively, the reconstructed implant can be loaded with radioactive sources and the dose-rates directly measured using some type of probe dose-rate meter. These latter measurements can be made by the radiotherapist if desired and it takes only a few minutes to carry out all the readings usually required on a normal implant." @default.
