- W2162609598 abstract "Fred Saad Oncology and Director of Clinical Research in Oncology at the University of Montreal Hospital Center. He is a full professor in the Department of Surgery and holds the endowed chair in prostate cancer research at the University of Montreal. He obtained his medical degree and urology training at the University of Montreal and graduated in 1990. It was during his fellowship in urologic oncology, with Dr Yves Fradet at the University of Laval, that his interest in translational research became a priority. On his return on staff at the University of Montreal Hospital Center and the Montreal Cancer Institute, Dr Saad established the first dedicated basic research laboratory in prostate cancer research and the first uro-oncology clinic. This was possible only because of the collaborations he established between clinicians, scientists, and pathologists. Over the last 20 years, his collaboration with Dr Anne-Marie MesMasson, a senior scientist at the CHUM Research Center, has allowed for the establishment of a bio bank of tissue, blood, and clinical data on more than 2000 patients operated for prostate cancer at his institution. This collaboration has also allowed the research unit to train students at the predoctoral, doctoral, and postdoctoral levels as well as residents and fellows. Creating an environment where clinicians and basic scientists work together to better understand the biology of prostate cancer has allowed his team to identify biomarkers that help in predicting outcome in patients with prostate cancer. Given the success of his team, Dr Saad has taken on the lead role in a national initiative funded by the Terry Fox Research Institute to create a biomarker network of centers of excellence across Canada. This network is tasked with establishing a biomarker-driven decision model for the treatment of prostate cancer. Dr Saad also plays a lead role in the Movember biomarker initiatives that have helped create collaborations with centers of excellence internationally. The goal of personalizing medical therapy to patient-specific cancers has also led to a unique collaboration with the renowned Polytechnique Engineering School at the University of Montreal. This collaboration has helped create a microfluidic platform that allows direct testing of therapeutics with tumors and is starting clinical validation. Dr Saad has dedicated much of his clinical research efforts in advanced prostate cancer. He was actively" @default.
